The 1940s were a decade of the Gregorian calendar which began on January 1, 1940 and ended on December 31, 1949. During this time, Peanuts didn't exist and Schulz was drawing Li'l Folks, which only started in 1947. It consisted of weekly gag cartoons, featuring early prototypes of Shermy, Patty, Snoopy and Charlie Brown.
