"Poor Sweet Baby" is a song from the stage production Snoopy!!! The Musical and the TV special of the same name It is sung by Peppermint Patty to Charlie Brown. It is sung from the viewpoint of the type of girl Charlie Brown would like: a girl who would cuddle up close to him, kiss his ear and whisper "Poor, sweet baby". At the end of the song, Peppermint Patty declares that it would never happen. The song is based on the strip from April 8, 1973.
Given Peppermint Patty's demonstrated crush on Charlie Brown in both the strip and in the animated specials, the delivery of the song and her ending line is subject to different interpretations: some productions choose to portray her as being sarcastic, while in others she expresses genuine emotion only to deny it out of embarrassment. In the animated special, she shoves him away only to sheepishly grin at the camera.
The Little Red-Haired Girl makes a brief appearance during the song in the television version of Snoopy!!! The Musical.
Faith Hill performed this song for the documentary and tribute special Here's to You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years, broadcast on CBS on May 10, 2000.
Lyrics[]
- Peppermint Patty: Poor, sweet baby,
- Poor, poor, sweet, sweet baby.
- Show me where it hurts, I'll tell you how to make it well,
- I've won lots of loving cups for playing show and tell.
- My poor, sweet baby,
- Poor, poor, sweet, sweet baby.
- When you neeed a shoulder, come and try mine on for size,
- I'm real good at holding hands and,
- Really great at drying eyes.
- Just try me,
- Cry me all your tears.
- Why deny me,
- The pleasure of dryin' 'em?
- Stoppin' you cryin' 'em?
- Don't despair for,
- Smiles are what I'm there for.
- You won't have to call on me, I'll always be right near,
- Near to kiss and cuddle you and,
- Whisper in your little ear,
- Don't fear.
- There, there, baby.
- Poor, sweet baby,
- Poor, sweet baby,
- Mama's here.
- Like that, Chuck?
- Charlie Brown: Yeah, just like that.
- Peppermint Patty: Forget it, Chuck... It'll never happen!
