~ Roy

Roy is a minor male character who often appear as a camp friend in the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz.

History[]

19650611

Roy's first appearance in the strip from June 11, 1965.

Roy first appeared in the strip from June 11, 1965, where he meets Charlie Brown at summer camp. At this time, Roy feels lonely, which attracts Charlie Brown to befriend him. Although he initially treats Charlie Brown as "a good temporary friend".

In the comics strip from June 20, 1966, Roy meets Linus at summer camp. At the same year, he introduces Charlie Brown and Linus to his friend Peppermint Patty, whose impact on the strip would be much greater than him.

Initially Roy only meets other Peanuts characters at summer camp, but in later comics he often buys tickets and plays baseball with them. Sometimes he becomes Peppermint Patty's classmate. It is unclear whether he lived near the other characters.

Roy was never a major character, not even in the year of his debut. Roy continued to appear occasionally (mostly at camp) until the mid 1970s. He made his last appearance on May 27, 1984. Some say his role as Peppermint Patty's friend was taken over by Marcie.

Roy has appeared in Peanuts animated television specials, such as Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown? He has silent parts in He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown, Snoopy Presents: It's the Small Things, Charlie Brown and Snoopy Presents: Lucy's School, and a speaking part in He's a Bully, Charlie Brown. He also appears in a MetLife Peanuts Thanksgiving commercial from 1988.

Personality[]

Like Charlie Brown, Roy is depressed at first. He feels lonely and is afraid to "sing out" around the campfire.

In later comics, he gradually changes his personality, taking the initiative to communicate with Linus, introducing him to fishing and saying words around the campfire. He's also often patient, especially when listening to Peppermint Patty's tirade.

Relationships[]

Charlie Brown[]

Charlie Brown and Roy have been on good terms since their first meet. They often met at summer camp and baseball games.

Linus[]

Linus and Roy are also on good terms. Excepted of being camp friends, they also communicate by letter. The comics strip from October 28, 1966 proves Linus also convinced him of the Great Pumpkin.

Peppermint Patty[]

In the later comics, Roy has the closest relationship with Peppermint Patty. In the comics strip from August 22, 1966, when he wrote to Linus, Peppermint Patty didn't hesitate to let him introduce herself to his friends. Peppermint Patty would often make a long speech in front of him, but he often listening without saying a word. They were also often classmates at the same school, although Marcie later took his place.
