War and Peace (Russian: Война и мир) is a literary work by Russian author Leo Tolstoy. It was first published in 1869. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the work mixes fictional narrative with chapters on history and philosophy and chronicles the French invasion of Russia and the impact of the Napoleonic Era on Tsarist society through the stories of five Russian aristocratic families. War and Peace has appeared several times in Peanuts media most notably in Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! and The Peanuts Movie.
- Beginning on March 27, 1972, Snoopy begins reading the book word by word every single day. He is interrupted by Woodstock who wants Snoopy to read it to him and the cat next-door who supposedly attacked Woodstock. He eventually stops reading on April 17.
- In the Sunday strip from March 9, 1980, Charlie Brown is shamed into helping his sister Sally with her homework when she insinuates that she is not asking him to do much, unlike Leo Tolstoy who got his wife Sonya to copy War and Peace seven times by hand.
- The book is used as a plot device in Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! in which Charlie Brown has to read the book during Christmas vacation, ruining his holiday season and restricting him from partaking in the New Year's festivities.
- In The Peanuts Movie, the book is also used as a plot device in which Charlie Brown chooses to read it for his book report in order to impress the Little Red-Haired Girl while she is away taking care of her grandmother.
